About me

Sarah Juliet Lauro is a scholar of literature and film and considers herself a cultural historian. Although she has published in other areas, she is mostly known for her work on the zombie, a myth with African origins that is deeply enmeshed in the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Her recent work turns from zombies to commemorations of slave resistance in monuments and museums, literature, film, art, and videogames.

S.J. spent her childhood in Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa, and her work is driven by the impulse to illustrate how deeply Africa has shaped American culture. She considers herself a global citizen and a recent fellowship at Heidelberg University in Germany allowed her to launch a new project on zombies, vampires, and climate change. She enjoys both editing and collaboration and especially helping students become better writers without resorting to AI. She is an associate professor in the department of English and Writing at the University of Tampa.

S.J. has consulted on one novel, one documentary, and contributed to many others. Please contact her if you have interest in these areas.
